UX London 2015 – A (not-so) brief summary

I haven’t had a lot of time to write lately, but finally managed to summarise some key points from UX London 2015, which was held at the Laban Centre in Greenwich.

Wednesday – Product Day:

Julie Zhuo (Head of product at Facebook) talked about their product approach, she outlined two models they use:

SHIP LOVE – they assess products on Ease of use, Value and Well Crafted

Use product briefs, data and a 3 year roadmap/vision to guide product direction


Des Traynor talked about product management and the need to ensure products are cohesive and avoid feature bloat, he discussed the temptation to always build new stuff, rather than focus on the depth or quality of existing features. Every feature must map to an actual job a user needs to do (Sketchnote)

Anthony Mann (From ObjectCreate and previously Apple) talked about how Software creates non-linear behaviour and therefore our tools need to support this, hence why using paper and digital prototyping provides enactive thinking and allows us to consider interactions and behaviours better than tradition design approaches. Jon Kolko (VP of design at Blackboard) Gave a presentation and then a workshop on Product Design and Design and Product strategy. He discussed the need for Vision, Process and Hardwork to delivery great products, gave his views on what makes a good product owner and talked about the need for both Behavioural Insight and Product/Market fit. The workshop then covered a process for turning customer observations into insights, patterns, product capabilities and ultimately prioritised value propositions. (sketchnote)

Thursday – People Day:

Stephen Anderson (Chief Experience Officer at Bloomboard) talked about detail, and how features and functionality are the obvious stuff, but the overall experience design is in the detail. In his view individual beliefs, organisation processes and cultural values get in the way of delivering high quality experiences. Firms need to decide if they value Quality or Delivery most. Adam Connor(Experience Design Director at Mad*Pow) talked about bad habits in design reviews and how this prevents good feedback. See my sketchnote for his tips

Cecilia Weckstrom (LEGO.com) talked about how they designed through the eyes of a child, but actually it all applies to adults too. (sketchnote)

Friday – Platform Day:

Karen Mcgrane talked about content led design, and suggested we should start by modelling our content first before considering form factor as the future form factors we may need to deal with can’t be predicted. We need to move away from creating ‘pages’ and focus on flexible content (sketchnote)

Brad Frost talked about Atomic design, which focuses on building up design patterns from smaller building blocks and create element collages which provide reusability and consistency. He has a good guide to this on his site and demonstrated patternlab.io (sketchnote)

Patrick and Jenna from Hanerino talked about designing for journeys across multiple devices from TVs to mobile, and the need to design for ecosystems and ensure a consistent experience.


Tom Coates (Product club) discussed UX design for IoT and gave his views on specific UI’s vs General Purpose UI’s and using service layers to manage multiple things. In his view a general purpose interface which connects to lots of devices via a service layer is a better solution than individual UX for every device. (sketchnote)
